Are you doing Biology (Wile-2nd Edition)? I have a few tips:
I video called one of my friends every week, and we read or studied biology. It helped keep us on track, to internalize the reading, and have phrases that helped us remember the terms.
I know Biology is often a subject students do on their own, but I recommend doing it LS. My teacher wrote notes on the board, but had us write them down. Writing notes helps you remember it, and her method was a good balance between taking notes and having her help for the notes we should write down.
I did dissections with a friend, and our siblings watched us. My teacher also recommended doing them with a friend or sibling! Dissections can be interesting, and it’s fun when you are not doing it by yourself.
Are you doing Chemistry (Wile-Berean Builders)? Marie, a junior, said: “Chemistry rarely makes sense on the first read-through, so don’t worry if you’re a little lost at first. Re-reading the concepts with workbook questions in mind can help add context to what had previously been a bunch of new, confusing words. When it comes to the math concepts in chemistry, you only get out of it what you put in. Every practice problem and review question is there to help cement the new ideas in your head and I would strongly recommend doing them.”
Is Earth Science one of your subjects? We have some tips!
Maureen, a sophomore, said, “Earth Science was definitely a difficult course. However, if you stay on top of things, it can be fun, and you can learn a lot. I did not take an LS class, but I did have an amazing TA. My biggest advice to anyone taking Earth Science would be to set deadlines and plan ahead. Check every Monday, or Sunday, to see how many essays you have for the week. Then, set deadlines, pick which days you are going to write which essay, and stick to those days as closely as possible. The more deadlines you set will help you become more accountable, in Earth Science, and school in general.”
She also said, “Lastly, try not to get overwhelmed. Most students take this course as a Freshman, and Freshman year with MODG is anything but easy. Just stay focused, but don’t be hard on yourself if you slip a bit behind. Never be afraid to ask for help and good luck!”
As Maureen said, don’t be too hard on yourself if you get behind! Talk to your parents, teacher, and consultant. They can help you get caught up!
Are you doing Natural Science? A lot of students skip this course, but I loved it!
Animals hibernate or die in the winter, so make sure your animal project will work. A friend and I started a moth project, but there aren’t any moths where we are in the winter, so it didn’t work! I switched to a bird project, and it’s okay if the first one doesn’t work out, but I recommend seeing if the insects or animals you are going to have for your project will be alive!
Natural Science is a good course to take time to laugh and be shocked at how amazing nature is. Don’t rush through the reading!
Take this class! It was nice to have an easier class on top of Ancient History and my other classes, and it is awesome to read about what animals can do! You can take it in the summer if you want to do a “STEM” track for science.
