William Speer, a high school junior enrolled in MODG, is a very talented musician. William plays both the piano and the violin as well as sings in his church choir.
Piano
William has been playing piano since 2016. Although he enjoys playing many different genres, his favorite classical piece to play is Tarantella by Pieczonka. He competed in the National Federation of Music Festival competition held at Grove City College, PA, on March 16, 2024. William received the highest possible score of “superior “from all judges. He performed “Symphony of Spring” by Kevin Costly as well as Rondo alla Turca Op 68 by Joann Friedrich Burgmuller. Students were judged on memory, accuracy, technique, and musicianship. Along with his performance, he also took a music theory exam within the competition which he also received the highest mark of “superior”. This was William’s first competition which makes this accomplishment even more superior. He has performed in over 16 recitals since he began playing.
Violin
Playing the Violin is a newer interest of William’s. He has been playing the violin for almost two years. He has studied pieces from Suzuki Violin and has done performances of various pieces including arrangements by Suzuki, Bach, and Bayley.
Choir
William is enrolled and participates in the youth choir program, Gradus Cantorum, at the Latin parish, Most Precious Blood of Jesus Parish in Pittsburgh, PA. He has also been invited to sing for the adult schola. He has been singing in this choir for three years. With this choir William sings Gregorian chant, Polyphonic Latin Motets, and various Sacred hymns.
Out of all the music William is involved in, he shared that he enjoyed playing the piano the most. He will continue to advance in piano, violin, and choir through college. However, he has not decided whether he want to go to school for music yet.
